Call For Tutorial Proposals

The ICONIP2006 Organizing Committee invites  proposals for tutorials to be held at the 13th International Conference on Neural Information Processing (ICONIP2006), Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Hong Kong. The tutorials will be held on October 3, immediately before the start of the main conference. The tutorials can be half day or full day.

Tutorials are an effective way to educate conference attendees about specific topics, or to provide background necessary to understand technical advances.  For ICONIP2006, we are seeking tutorials in all areas of neural information processing including, but not limited to the following:

  • Neuroinformatics
  • Bioinformatics
  • Game Theory
  • Data Mining
  • Intelligent Data Engineering

The ideal tutorial should attract a wide audience. It should be broad enough to provide a gentle introduction to the chosen research area, but it should also cover the most important works in depth. Proposals that exclusively focus on the presenters' own work or commercial presentations are not eligible.

Tutorial attendees will be given tutorial notes in a hardcopy format. Organizers of the tutorials will also make their notes available on their website prior to the conference (see the deadline below).

Proposal Detail

Proposals should provide sufficient information to evaluate the quality and importance of the topic, the likely quality of the presentation materials, and the speakers' teaching ability. When proposing a tutorial, please use the template in your proposal. The proposal should be 2-3 pages long (plus possibly extra materials). Tutorial proposals should address the following issues:

  • Basic information: Title, contact information for each tutor, duration, keywords, and scope or objective of the proposed tutorial.
  • Target audience: Proposals must clearly identify the intended audience for the tutorial (e.g., beginners or experts of the area).
  • Prerequisite knowledge of audience: What background will be required of the audience?
  • Tutorial abstract: Provide an abstract of the proposed tutorial.
  • Full description: Provide a full description of the proposed tutorial, in which the following issues should be addressed
    a)   Content quality: Provide a detailed outline of the topics to be presented, including estimates for the time that will be devoted to each subject. If possible, provide samples of past tutorial slides or teaching materials. In case of multiple presenters, specify how you will distribute the work.
    b)   Coverage: How deep/broad is the proposed tutorial? How valuable would the tutorial be with the given scope? What is the benefit to participants?
    c)   Publicity: How do you intend to advertise the tutorial? How will you reach the most interested and appropriate participants?
    d)   Format: How will you present the material? Will there be multi-media parts of the presentation? Do you plan software demonstrations? Specify any non-standard technical equipment that you would need. The standard equipment includes a LCD projector, an overhead projector, a single projection screen and cordless microphones.
  • Tutorial history: Please identify any other venues in which the tutorial has been or will be presented. Any evidence supporting excellent teaching skills will enhance chances of acceptance.
  • Presenter biography: Please indicate the presenters' background and a list of publications in the tutorial area.
  • Relevant references: Please list references relevant to the proposed tutorial.

ICONIP2006 will be responsible for the following:

  • Providing a meeting place and logistical support for the tutorial.
  • In conjunction with the organizers, determining the tutorial date and time (Organizing committee constraints will be accommodated to the greatest possible extent).
  • Duplicating tutorial notes (up to a total of 100 pages per participant) and distributing them to the participants.

ICONIP2006 reserves the right to cancel any tutorial if deadlines are missed or if too few attendees register for the tutorial to support the costs of running the tutorial. To cover costs, it will be necessary to charge tutorial participants a tutorial fee.

It is recommended to fill the template and submit the tutorial proposals in PDF format via e-mail to jamesk@cs.ust.hk on or before May 8, 2006.
